Although it not being released until 2019 the trailer for the adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Sematary is here. The trailer was brought to my attention after seeing it pop up as an advert. What really stood out to me was the masks used on the young children in the trailer. It shows them walking through the woods in animal masks with items such as a large wooden cross and a drum which also is played in the background of the chilling clip.
The extremely disturbing masks consist of many animals as seen in the image above; Rat, Horse, Rabbit, Dog. There are more used in the trailer that use really powerful metaphor for the returning of the dead animals.
"Kids used to dare each other to go into the woods at night," says John Lithgow's neighbour Jud Crandall as we see a montage of animal-masked children.
"They knew the power of that place. They feared it, those woods belong to something else."
Cue a montage of horrific images as we learn that the pet cemetery in the woods is bringing dead things back to life.
IT
Another well known film adaptation of a Stephen King novel is the 1990 film IT, based on the book of the same name. King's Pennywise Character a clown.
Lots of people are creeped out at the site of clown, whether it's at the circus or creeping around in the woods at night. Movies like Stephen King's 'IT' and the new season of 'American Horror Story' featuring some terrifying clowns that take prey on the fears of the viewer. The second thing is people don't inherently trust people who are always happy and laughing. For a lot of people, the fear of clowns actually is part of a more general fear of masked creatures. In regular parlance it's called: coulrophobia.
Masklophobia, or the fear of masks, is a diagnosed phobia. It is especially common in children and part of normal childhood development.
