I looked at the work of Sian Davey particularly Martha, I love how natural the images are you can tell that the model is comfortable and knows the photographer well, in this case mother and daughter.
I chose to revisit Sian Davies Martha, Sian came for a talk previously at Plymouth College of Art and I remember finding her work intriguing.
I wanted to look at the work Martha as I felt it resonates with my current project as it is
exploring the relationship of a significant person through the perspective of photography and I thought that it would be interesting to see the differences and similarities in our projects. I like the natural way the subject/s are shown in the images. The pieces feel very open and honest which I believe is an important aspect in photography, and photographing such an intimate subject. There is not much about the work that I do not like however I think when photographing and documenting a personal thing it is important to consider not just the model but how the message is being received. I feel without context some of this is lost in the work.
This for me would challenge how I plan to show something so intimate and I believe that it has helped me to explore how I think about photographing my boyfriend and what I actually want people to see.
My favorite image in the series is called ‘In the Kitchen’ (first image shown) I feel the image captures a moment beautifully. There is a wish to know what is being thought about by Martha, questioning is she happy here, sad or methodical?
