Larry Sultan’s Pictures from home has been an very significant piece of research for me. He speaks about the ethics of his work and how he kind of felt like he was exploiting his family until they became contributors themselves.
I really understand the issue he talks about as within my own work in Manifesto I want to explore my family and picture them but I do not want to do anything that would make them uncomfortable. Or exploit them in any way.
Began by looking at home movies and wanted to recreate family photos. A celebration of family.
His images are a mixture of both staged and documentary work. The truth is about performance, how we perform, how we project. The truth can be staged and it can be found, there isn't such a big division between the two.
